On the Day of Rockoning, It's Who Dares Wins

Eurovision winner, 1970
Dana, Ireland
Snowdrops and daffodils
butterflies and bees
sailboats and fishermen
things of the sea
wishing-wells
wedding bells
early morning dew
all kinds of everything remind me of you
Seagulls and aeroplanes
things of the sky
winds that go howlin'
breezes that sigh
city sights
neon lights
grey skies or blue
all kinds of everything remind me of you
Summertime
wintertime
spring and autumn too
Monday
Tuesday every day
I think of you.
Dances
romances
things of the night
sunshine and holidays
postcards to write
Budding trees
autumn leaves
a snowflake or two
all kinds of everything remind me of you.
Summertime
wintertime
spring and autumn too
seasons will never change
the way that I love you.
Dances
romances
things of the night
sunshine and holidays
postcards to write
Budding trees
autumn leaves
a snowflake or two
all kinds of everything remind me of you.
All kinds of everything remind me of you.

Eurovision winner, 2006
Lordi, Finland
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
The saints are crippled
On this sinners' night
Lost are the lambs with no guiding light
The walls come down like thunder
The rocks about to roll
It's The Arockalypse
Now bare your soul
All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high
The true believers
Thou shall be saved
Brothers and sisters keep strong in the faith
On the day of Rockoning
It's who dares, wins
You will see the jokers soon'll be the new kings
All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high
Wings on my back
I got horns on my head
My fangs are sharp
And my eyes are red
Not quite an angel
The one that fell
Now choose to join us or go straight to Hell
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Is this really what we've sunk to? If she were dead, Dana's cherubic corpse would be spinning in its grave. And black death metal monster rockers Lordi would like that just fine. Saturday night, the Finnish band scooped the biggest win in the Eurovision's 51 year history. Gone are the days when a little girl singing sweetly in a beflowered frock was enough to earn douze points from the Andorran jury. Now we have orcs and Klingons representing the collective European taste. I blame the change on the Ukrainians. A few years back, when the former Soviet countries started entering the competition, they brought their mad dancing and mad stomping and mad pyrotechnics into the mix. While we were still entering dozy ballads (a strategy which won the competition 4 times in a row for Ireland in the 90s*), the Ukrainians brought on the Slavic Xena Warrior Princess in the form of Ruslana. Since Ruslana, the winners have been determined by the loudest gimmick. I say bring back the old days when we could count on Spain to give Portugal douze points and visa versa, on Cyprus to give Greece douze points but nul points to Turkey, on France and Britain to ignore each other completely, and for Ireland to slip in to the winners' slot when no one was looking.
Maybe we need a war to re-establish our nationalist priorities.
*Well, 3 times. But in 199mumble, the winning Norwegian entry was written, produced and sang/sung by the Irish.

Err... The Balkans all voted for the other Balkans. The Baltics all voted for the other Baltics. Admittedly Spain and Portugal didn't play the game, but Ireland and England voted for each other fairly predictably...
I say long live trying new stuff and not entering the same tired old (wubbish) ballad over and over and over.
As Marty said on the night, "Why can't we have some neighbours for once?" Maybe the melting of the polar icecaps will send Iceland floating our way for next time.
Dana? Cherubic? She is the sternest, most right wing conservative psycho bee-atch in town. Snowdrops and daffodils are all very well, just don't get knocked up or it will be off to a convent with you! I bet our good friends Lordi would not try to ban contraception (they may not need to with those masks). Watch out Dana, the Arockalypse is coming! And you are top of the Lordis list for the axe! (So many bad puns, so little time.)
You are evidently a very bitter and potentially violent person (and of course I've seen what you can do with a claw hammer). Exactly the reason this sort of death metal is bad for Europe.
Are old 8-tracks of death metal just now reaching Finland?
It's probably due to all that winter darkness rather than a time delay. If they hibernate half the year, they're bound to be behind the times. Finland can be a terrifying place.
And they have an unnaturally high percentage of elves in the general population.
